I had a ton of ideas I wanted to post for Halloween but the last month has been seriously crazy for us. Thanks to Covid-19, we’ve had two positive cases in this house recently. Throw in a fractured foot, and my daughter’s new elimination diet to figure out some ‘new’ allergies and you get the picture. Fortunately, we’re back on track now.
If you don’t like trick or treating because of the risks (and stress) that come with an allergic child then here are some fun and inclusive ideas that can be done at home. Or maybe you just don’t like trick or treating and just do things at home anyway. I also realise, that with the massive spike in Coronavirus cases in the UK, some kids might not get the Halloween they were hoping for. If you suddenly find you are required to isolate and are faced with some last-minute planning, I hope that some of these ideas might bring some fun to your house.
Before I go any further let’s get the reminder/warning out of the way. Everyone is different and manufacturing processes can change so it is VERY IMPORTANT that you always check the labels of any products mentioned here to meet your own, or their specific needs.
Edible Eyes
You might notice I use these little Cake Decor edible eyes a lot. They are really handy to make things a little more fun. I bought them in the baking aisle at Asda, but I’ve also seen them in the Co-Op. We find them so useful that we keep them in the store cupboard all year.
Monster Cup Cakes
These guys are the cutest. If you can make cupcakes then why not make some dairy-free ‘buttercream’ icing, in different colours to decorate? Add some edible eyes for a quick win. Don’t want to make the cakes? Asda sells plain fairy cakes that are dairy-free.
Struggling with your dairy-free buttercream? Then keep an eye out for my next post on Perfectly Pipeable Buttercream Icing. I used Sugar Flair gel colours for the icing as they offer really vibrant colours. I bought a set of six rainbow colours from Amazon. It felt a little extravagant but they have a Best Before End of 12/20206 which I was impressed with. I contacted the company to enquire about allergens and received a great response that satisfies our personal need to be dairy-free.
Spooky Sandwiches
These are another quick win if you have those edible eyes, but the picks do need to be USED UNDER SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN. These Halloween Cupcake toppers are great. Of course, they can be added to cupcakes but they are useful for making sandwiches a little more interesting. Please be careful if using these with young children. Make your favourite dairy-free sandwich and cut it into small squares. Add a Halloween topper and some edible eyes for a bit more fun. Our sandwich is dairy-free cheese slices and cucumber.
Jack O Lantern Faces
If you are making a spooky lunch, why not add to the fun by decorating some clementines, satsumas or oranges, using a Sharpie or marker pen? You need to wash the fruit first, to remove any wax coating on the skin, otherwise, it won’t work. Just wash with a few drops of diluted washing-up liquid and a couple of drops of vinegar or lemon juice. Make sure they are completely dry before decorating.
Scary Fruit Snack Pots
How about these mandarin fruit snack pots from Dole? Decorate them with a Sharpie or other marker pen.

Green Jelly with edible Eyes
This one is always a winner in our house, just because everyone likes jelly. Set some green jelly in some clear plastic cups or glasses and top with edible eyes. Make sure the jelly is cold if you are using glass. You can always add a spot of Heavenly spray cream or some whipped Elmlea plant cream with eyes on top.
Fill bags with popcorn or marshmallows for a Halloween movie night
Add your favourite popcorn or some marshmallows to a clear bag and add a face with a Sharpie or marker pen for an easy win and settle down for a Halloween movie night.
The boring but important bit. Always check the labels!
I know I am repeating myself but it is a very important point. Please remember if you are providing for someone with an allergy that everyone is different and manufacturing processes can change so it is VERY IMPORTANT that you always check the labels of any products mentioned here to meet your own, or their specific needs.
