Yay! It’s Friday. So it’s time for another Dairy-Free Friday post. This week it is all about biscuits.
Who doesn’t love a biscuit once in a while? Certainly, everyone in our household does! So, today’s focus is biscuits, but not the ones you find in the Free-From aisles. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Free From section of supermarkets, especially if you are looking for something specific. BUT, they do come at a premium price tag.
Check out the regular biscuits first!
You can find many biscuits in the aisles that are dairy-free. Especially, but not exclusively, the supermarket own brands. This was revolutionary for me, and my girls when we first started our dairy-free life. Finding a range of biscuits that my girls could have saved us from lots of tears in the classroom when they were younger.
Both girls had their own personal treat boxes that their class teachers could break into, whenever there was cause to. This was usually some event, such as a prize for good work, competitions, or just been overlooked in planning some activity. It even happened when they had a visitor to the school who had a dairy allergy. The staff borrowed the treat box to offer something to a child who was touring the school. Sounds a bit cheeky but in fairness, I would not want a child to miss out if we could help and the school always reimbursed me to replace what they had used.
So here’s a quick summary of what I grabbed in one shopping trip to Asda. I have to say it was very busy, which is just as well, otherwise, I may have come home with even more!
- Jammie Dodgers
- Digestives, Asda
- Bourbon Biscuits, Asda (may contain milk)
- Rich Tea, Asda (not suitable for milk allergy)
- Ginger Nuts, Asda
- Fox’s Party Rings
- Cookies & Cream, Asda (may contain milk)
- Original Oreo (may contain milk)
This is by no means a comprehensive list but I think it illustrates the point well enough. You can find similar in the biscuit aisles of most UK supermarkets, it just so happens that Asda is closest to us.
Always check the labels. Every single time!
If cross-contamination is of issue then I appreciate that it may be frustrating that some of the products above carry a may contain warning, but there are certainly some biscuits that do not have these warnings. As always, it is VERY important that you check the labels every single time to comply with your own specific dietary requirements, or for the person, you are providing for.
Allergens. Manufacturers can and do change their ingredients and processing without notice. All ingredients should be checked every time with regard to specific allergens. Please take note of any “may contain” warnings if you are at risk from cross-contamination. Information correct at time of writing.
