It’s a long summer holiday and the girls are constantly looking for food. With increasing pressure on the family budget, this can make it really expensive when shopping the free-from aisles. I’m always looking at cost savings and am interested in what I can find that is dairy-free in Lidl. So, I popped to our nearest Lidl to see what I could find this week. Lidl is one of my ‘go-to’ places to see what I could find. Like a lot of supermarkets, you do need to put in the effort with reading labels and looking closely in the aisles.
So what did I find that is dairy-free in Lidl this week?
Lidl Non-Dairy Iced Desserts
Well – it’s hot outside and forecast to get hotter so naturally, I was interested in what I could find in the freezer section. I must have timed my visit badly as their stock was quite low (guess it’s popular!) but there were a few things available but always check the labels first for may contain statements for dairy.
- Ballino Sorbet in Mango & Pineapple or Coconut flavours. 500ml for £1.69
- Vermondo Vegan Ice Cream in Choco Brownie Love and Banana Chunk. 500ml (not sure of the price but the website currently states £1.99)
- Gelatelli Sorbet in Mango, Raspberry or Lemon flavours. 1 litre for £2.25.
- Vermondo Vegan Ice Cream Lollies. Box of three in either classic or almond. £1.99
Dairy-Free in the chilled section
I’m usually able to stock up quite well on dairy-free items in the chilled section at Lidl. Again, it was low on stock but to be fair is usually refilled quickly. If you are a fan of Flora Plant block butter then it may be worth a visit as both the salted and unsalted versions were on offer at £1.49 per block, which is cheaper than elsewhere. I really want to try these but my daughter cannot tolerate fava bean preparation which is currently listed as an ingredient.
However, I did come home with soya yogurt (Yay!) I bought large 500g pots of vanilla flavour and blueberry soya yogurt for 99p per pot which is a cost-saving to me against some other brands.
I also spotted a roll of Chef Select ready-rolled puff pastry for 99p. I like to make my own shortcrust pastry but I don’t even try with puff pastry as I find the shop-bought versions fine. This compares well for price at the moment. I’ve popped it in the freezer but will make cinnamon puff pastry wheels with it. These are great for a treat and kids love to help make these. It’s also great for making sausage rolls or a sausage plait for lunch or dinner.
Other dairy-free items
Thinking ahead (wishful thinking?) to when the girls return to school, I bought a box of Alesto Mango pure fruit Wind Ups, which also come in a strawberry flavour. These cost me £1.79 for a pack of five. I thought these might be handy for a school snack if I am short on time, as I usually like to bake banana bread or scones as snacks for school.
You can read my post about banana bread here. https://www.ultimatedairyfree.com/dairy-free-banana-bread/
Lastly, out of curiosity, I bought some Maryland Choc Chip vegan cookies for 65p. I’ve read about them but not seen them anywhere until now. The pack I bought does carry a may-contain statement for both dairy and nuts. If you are ok with may-contain statements then you may want to give them a try!
Usually, I find plenty more dairy-free in Lidl. It’s worth checking out your local store to see what you can find!
As always, manufacturing processes can change without notice so you should always check the labels. Prices were current at the time of writing in my local store.
